A day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans for two new bills—one targeting ‘Love Jihad’ and another aimed at restricting land transactions between Hindus and Muslims in the state—Badruddin Ajmal, the leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), strongly criticized the CM's proposals.
Ajmal addressed the media on Monday, asserting, “Every citizen of India should have the right to purchase land in Assam. It is deeply regrettable that the Chief Minister is suggesting legislation to limit land ownership for certain groups. This move constitutes a serious injustice against the public."Any such action by the government will be vehemently opposed by our party."
He also accused CM Sarma of bringing in such measures to appease the Hindu voters to gain electoral mileage for the BJP in the 2026 Assembly polls.
The AIUDF leader further accused Sarma of trying to deprive the Muslims of their constitutional rights. "The majority of Hindus in the country are secular, not communal. Sarma's decision to abolish the Muslim Marriage Registration Act of 1935 has annoyed the people greatly. Any leader from the BJP who interacts with the public will know about it," Ajmal said.
Ajmal asked Sarma to stop making comments aimed at certain communities. "Our country is based on democratic principles, and the Chief Minister should keep this in mind," he said with some emphasis.
Ajmal faulted Sarma most for what he termed non-performance of the Assam government under his leadership, saying that most of the operations of the government are World Bank-sponsored funds.
In response to Sarma’s comments about ‘Love Jihad,’ Ajmal pointed out that numerous interfaith marriages among prominent Bollywood figures have gone unchallenged.
On Sunday, CM Sarma announced that the state government would soon introduce a law against ‘Love Jihad’ that includes life imprisonment as a penalty. He also mentioned plans to implement policies restricting land sales to Muslims in Assam.
