It expressed apprehension that the Centre was attempting to bring in 40 amendments to the Waqf Act of 2013, by which these properties could easily be grabbed. This comes in the wake of reports that a related bill could be introduced in Parliament shortly.

It explained that Waqf properties were charitable donations from Muslim benefactors for religious and community welfare and said that the Waqf Act itself was enacted solely for the administration of such assets.

AIMPLB said that both the Constitution and the Shariat Application Act of 1937 protected Waqf properties, and any amendments tending to derogate from their nature or status would not be acceptable.

It also reiterated that Muslims would strongly resist any amendments that would alter the status of Waqf properties or encroach on the legal and judicial authority of the Waqf Boards.
