The political landscape has intensified following the recent rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College. Former Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam challenged Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to Rae Bareli on Tuesday, questioning why he has not traveled to Ayodhya or Kolkata.
On the social media platform X, Acharya Pramod Krishnam posted: “It’s fine to visit Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi Ji, but when will you go to ‘Ayodhya’ and ‘Kolkata’? Or will you just get irritated when asked questions?”
Previously, Krishnam had criticized the opposition’s reaction to the Kolkata case. He highlighted a discrepancy in the opposition's response, noting that while there were calls for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to resign over the Hathras incident, no similar demands have been made for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the Kolkata case.
Krishnam remarked: “When the Hathras incident occurred, opposition leaders were loudly demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. But in the Kolkata case, everyone is silent. No one is calling for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. The opposition leaders are only concerned about their vote banks. They have remained silent on the Ayodhya issue as well. If they speak out, it will be against the Ram Temple and PM Modi. The level of the opposition has fallen.”
Krishnam’s remarks on X came after Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, avoided addressing questions from journalists on Tuesday about the Kolkata case. The case has caused significant unrest in West Bengal and triggered protests from the medical community nationwide.
During a visit to his Lok Sabha constituency, Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi met with the family of a Dalit youth, Arjun Pasi, who was killed nine days ago in Nasirabad. When questioned about his stance on the Kolkata incident, he stated: “I am here to seek justice for the Dalit family, whose son was killed. I won’t speak on the Kolkata incident here, I have already spoken about it.”
When reporters pressed him further, especially in light of the Supreme Court’s critical comments, Rahul Gandhi responded: “I have come here seeking justice for Dalit family.” He added: “You don’t want to raise the issue of Dalits. You want to distract the issue. I am here seeking justice for the family.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on Rahul Gandhi’s comments, questioning whether seeking justice for a daughter should be seen as a distraction for the Congress MP.
