Arvind Kejriwal's Judicial Custody Extended to August 27 in Excise Policy Case

A Delhi court Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till August 27 in the alleged excise policy scam.

Last week, the Supreme Court denied Kejriwal's request for interim bail in the case over the excise policy scam being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant issued notice on Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest in the corruption case and another petition seeking bail. "Notice issued," ordered the bench while asking for a response from the central investigative agency and fixing the next hearing on August 23.

The AAP leader challenged his arrest and the subsequent remand orders, besides pleading for bail in the corruption case, in his special leave petition before the top court.

Kejriwal challenged the August 5 order of the Delhi High Court whereby it was held that his arrest was not illegal and was based on justifiable grounds, with the CBI presenting "evidently enough evidence" to support his detention and remand.

In a disputed verdict, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna of the Delhi High Court has asked Kejriwal to approach the trial court for interim bail.

The Delhi High Court is yet to decide on a bail plea by Kejriwal pertaining to the CBI case. The CBI, before the special court reserved its order on July 29, filed its charge sheet against AAP leader Kejriwal and other accused individuals in the excise policy case.

The Enforcement Directorate had already filed its prosecution complaint in the money laundering case, wherein both AAP and its national convenor Kejriwal were named as accused.
