He won with a comfortable margin of 197,120 votes against his nearest rival, Congress nominee Kulbir Singh Zira.
Amritpal Singh secured 404,430 votes, while Zira got 207,310. In third place was Laljit Singh Bhullar of the Aam Aadmi Party, who scored 194,836 votes. In the fifth position was the BJP's Manjit Singh Manna, polling 86,373 votes, who was behind Virsa Singh Valtoha of the Shiromani Akali Dal, who got 86,416 votes.
He is seen and projected by his supporters and sympathizers as the new generation of Sikh 'separatist leaders' in the league of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was eliminated during the Indian Army's Operation Blue Star in 1984. The late separatist leader happens to be the "inspiration" for Amritpal Singh himself.
A strong advocate of Khalistan and a self-proclaimed preacher, Amritpal Singh had been delivering speeches on 'separatist' lines before he was lodged in jail. Central investigating agencies were taking serious cognizance of his activities and compared him with Bhindranwale on the basis of his look—navy blue turban, white chola, and a large kirpan. But unlike Bhindranwale, Amritpal Singh has not received any religious education from any religious institution. A polytechnic dropout, he has shorn hair and beard during the course of his stay in Dubai. Police records show that after Amritpal Singh married UK-based NRI Kirandeep Kaur in 2023, he has been involved in several disputes, kidnappings, and issuing threats.
However, the only silver lining for AAP was retaining Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's stronghold of Sangrur.
AAP, which decided to contest the Lok Sabha polls independently, managed to secure only three seats. The other two winning candidates were Malwinder Singh Kang (Anandpur Sahib) and Raj Kumar Chabbewal (Hoshiarpur-reserved).
In a last-ditch effort just hours before the campaign ended, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal campaigned alongside the state Chief Minister for party candidate Hayer. They led a roadshow appealing to the people to elect Meet Hayer as their MP with a record number of votes.
Speaking during the roadshow amidst scorching temperatures, Kejriwal emphasized the importance of strengthening AAP's presence in the Lok Sabha to facilitate Punjab's development at the national level.
State Chief Minister Mann urged the electorate to surpass his previous victory margin and ensure a resounding win for Meet Hayer.
Bhagwant Mann holds the Dhuri Assembly seat, while his Cabinet minister, Meet Hayer, represents Barnala—both integral parts of the Sangrur Parliamentary constituency.
Meet Hayer secured victory over Congress nominee Sukhpal Singh Khaira by a significant margin of 172,560 votes. The outgoing MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who had won this seat in 1999, finished as the runner-up.
Relying on rural voters, Simranjit Singh Mann primarily raised issues concerning the Sikh community and advocated for Khalistan, a separate state.
In this constituency, former legislator and businessman Arvind Khanna was the BJP's candidate, while Shiromani Akali Dal, led by Sukhbir Badal, fielded former legislator Iqbal Singh Jhundan. Both suffered substantial defeats.
In the 2019 elections, Bhagwant Mann emerged as the sole AAP MP in Parliament, defeating the Congress candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon by a significant margin from Sangrur.
The by-poll for Sangrur was triggered by Bhagwant Mann's resignation following his victory in the Assembly elections, where AAP secured a landslide victory, winning 92 out of 117 seats.
