'We respect nationalism, committed to Indian market for over 25 years': Hyundai India after online backlash

“Hyundai Motor India has been committed to the Indian market for more than 25 years now and we stand firmly for our strong ethos of respecting nationalism… The unsolicited social media post linking Hyundai Motor India is offending our unparalleled commitment and service to this great country, India is second home to the Hyundai brand and we have zero tolerance policy towards insensitive communication and we strongly condemn any such view,” the statement read.

Hyundai Motor India on Sunday said that it respected and honoured nationalism. The company said it as part of clarification after a tweet put out by the official handle of Hyundai Pakistan which supported separatism in Kashmir and called for recognition of their (Kashmiris’) “struggle for freedom” which had triggered protests from Indian netizens.

“Let us remember the sacrifices of our Kashmiri brothers and sand in supports as they continue to struggle for freedom,” read a tweet posted from Hyundai Pakistan Official handle. This had resulted in backlash from India netizens who started trending #BoycottHyundai asking citizens to not buy this company’s cars.

Hyundai Motor India is the country’s second largest car market after Maruti Suzuki. Headquartered in Gurugram, it has a 16.2 percent of market share as of February 2019 and USD 5.5 billion annual turnover. Hyundai Motor India limited (HMIL)was formed on 6th May 1996. HMIL exports to 92 countries across Africa, Latin America, Australia, Middle east and Asia. For 10 years, it has been India’s top automobile exporter. It has two manufacturing centres in India, both in Tamil Nadu. For the month of January 2022, Hyundai Venue was the eighth highest selling car across all models in the country.

In December 2021, Hyundai India had announced that it has plans to invest around ₹4000 crore by 2028 into its electric vehicle segment. “As we continue to redefine the mobility space, today we are yet again showcasing our commitment towards Indian customers with the announcement of expanding our BEV line-up to six vehicles for the Indian market by 2028,” HMIL CEO S.S. Kim had said in an interview to PTI.
