Talking about the issue, Taufiq emphasized India should not give any leniency or facility to Rana, mentioning the notorious handling Ajmal Kasab was given, with a safety cell and special cuisine.

Mohammed Taufiq, affectionately called 'Chhotu Chai Wala' in Mumbai, who earned fame for his timely reaction that saved numerous lives in the 26/11 terror attacks, has criticized strongly the handling of terror accused Tahawwur Rana.

Talking about the issue, Taufiq emphasized India should not give any leniency or facility to Rana, mentioning the notorious handling Ajmal Kasab was given, with a safety cell and special cuisine.

Taufiq was not reticent, ".For India, there is no need to give him a cell. Biryani and amenities like the ones provided to Kasab. There should be a special law for terrorists, there should be a system so that they are hanged in 2-3 months." He stressed the requirement of certain, speedy legislation for handling terrorists, so that justice is delivered quickly.

Pakistani-Canadian citizen Tahawwur Rana is being considered for extradition to India over his role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed more than 160. Charged with supporting the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and facilitating the attacks logistically, Rana has been convicted in the United States already for his associations with the outlawed group.

His extradition took one step forward when, on April 7, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his emergency request to stop the transfer. Rana had petitioned Chief Justice John Roberts on March 20, 2025, for a stay, but the court refused the request. The order read, "The application for stay addressed to The Chief Justice and referred to the Court is denied."

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) initially charged Rana with a case of criminal conspiracy in Delhi after the attacks. Although extradition is in connection with the case, it is not certain if the Mumbai Police can seek custody of Rana for subsequent local investigations.

Officials said they are still considering the extradition terms. "Only after reviewing the reasons for extradition will it become evident whether custody can be requested by the Mumbai Crime Branch in this case," added a source who is aware of the procedure.

Mumbai Police have so far not been served with any formal notice on the handover of Rana for questioning or prosecution in the city.

Rana's suspected activity with LeT handlers and his assistance in one of the most deadly terror attacks on Indian territory has re-ignited the popular call for tougher, prompter punitive action against those convicted of terrorism.
