Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has officially announced actor-turned-politician Vijay as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The move was made in a crucial executive committee meeting at party headquarters in Chennai, where leadership also made it emphatically clear that TVK would not ally with the DMK or BJP.
A. special resolution approving Vijay's candidacy was passed by the party's executive committee, who also announced plans for a forthcoming massive state conference to be held next month. Further, TVK plans to initiate village-level public gatherings to create awareness about the party's vision and ideology among the masses.
Vijay presided over the TVK State Executive Committee Meeting, a strategic move in prepping for high-stakes 2026 elections. Various significant resolutions were adopted during the meeting.
One of the important items discussed was the recent utterances of Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the English language. The party vehemently condemned the remarks, terming them as "malicious" and as a "direct" attack on Tamil Nadu's age-old two-language policy.
Reasserting its cultural and linguistic position, TVK announced that it would never allow Hindi or Sanskrit to be imposed upon Tamil Nadu. The party also opposed the Election Commission of India's proposal to update electoral rolls at this juncture, labeling it as a well-planned attempt to suppress minority votes in the state.
The change, according to the executive committee, seems to be targeted at increasing votes for the BJP—a step the party deems to be anti-democratic.
The meeting also dwelled on scaling up TVK chief Vijay's contact programme, laying out a meticulous campaign plan in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls.
