Victim’s Father Expresses Disillusionment with Mamata Banerjee

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, the victim's father said, "I once had complete trust in her. That is no longer the case. She claims to seek justice, but her actions speak otherwise.".

Parents of the junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata expressed deep disillusionment with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the police's handling of the case.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, the victim's father said, "I once had complete trust in her. That is no longer the case. She claims to seek justice, but her actions speak otherwise.".

Likewise, the Bengali Association members took to the streets to protest against the heinous crime by staging a demonstration at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Sunday, August 18, 2024. On the same day, junior doctors in Kolkata hit the streets carrying placards in protest against the alleged assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor.

The victim's father said the current situation is being criticized as, "The authorities are now calling for justice but are attempting to silence the public who echo the same demand."

In another protest, football fans of rival clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal were involved in clashes and lathi-charges outside Salt Lake stadium, forcing the cancellation of a Durand Cup Derby due to security concerns.

Though the father admitted that the CBI, which took over the case from the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, was making some progress, he was still troubled. He said he had given a page from his daughter's diary to the CBI but refused to disclose its contents.

He had also questioned the state government's welfare policies and asked the people of Bengal to examine their safety before falling for 'Kanyashree' and 'Lakshmir Bhandar' initiatives.

The body of the junior doctor was found on August 9 inside a seminar hall at the R.G. Kar Medical College. Civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, stationed at the outpost of the hospital, Sanjoy Roy has been arrested following the evidence found in the CCTVs.

Though Roy reportedly confessed to the crime, there are wide concerns that this brutal act may have involved more than one perpetrator. The victim's father and many others believe that such violence could not have been committed by a single individual alone.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, will hear the matter on Tuesday. It also includes Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
