Terrorist killed in gunfight was suicide bomber: J&K Police

The police identified the terrorist as Aamir Riyaz from South Kashmir's Pulwama district. He was also affiliated with the terror outfit 'Gazwatul Hind'and was a relative of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack accused militant, said the police.

The militant who was killed in the Srinagar encounter on Thursday was a suicide bomber, the Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed on Friday.

The police identified the terrorist as Aamir Riyaz from South Kashmir's Pulwama district. He was also affiliated with the terror outfit 'Gazwatul Hind'and was a relative of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack accused militant, said the police.

"Terrorist killed in Srinagar Encounter identified as Aamir Riyaz of Khrew Pulwama affiliated with proscribed terror outfit Mujahideen Gazwatul Hind. He was relative of one of the accused of LethporaTerrorAttack and was assigned to carry out fidayeen attack," police tweeted quoting Kashmir Inspector General of Police, Vijay Kumar.

The joint team of the police and the army had started a search operation after receiving a lead about the presence of terrorists on Thursday. The gunfight between the terrorist and security forces took place after the area was sealed off for the search on the same day.

As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.
