Terror outfuts must be prevented from using Afghanistan soil as sanctuary for carrying out attacks: BRICS

Discussing the concerns over the situation in Afghanistan, the BRICS nations strongly condemned terror activities that were carried in and around the Afghan territories. However, none of the leaders explicitly mentioned the Taliban during the entire summit.

The leaders of the 13th BRICS Summit, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday highlighted the concerns and priorities regarding fighting terrorism, including preventing attempts of outfits to use Afghan territory for acts of terrorism.

Discussing the concerns over the situation in Afghanistan, the BRICS nations strongly condemned terror activities that were carried in and around the Afghan territories. However, none of the leaders explicitly mentioned the Taliban during the entire summit.

The leaders also condemned the Kabul airport attacks of 26 August, while emphasizing the need to settle matters by peaceful means.

“We stress the need to contribute to fostering an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue so as to ensure stability, civil peace, law and order in the country,’’ said the New Delhi Declaration after the summit.

In the opening remarks, both PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping refrained from mentioning Afghanistan’s name and situation. However, Putin took indirect jibes at western countries by saying that the Afghanistan crisis is a direct consequence of "irresponsible attempts to impose alien values from the outside.

However, the Afghanistan situation was discussed in detail later, the Times of India reported.

After the Summit was over, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Was delighted to host the virtual #BRICS Summit in the 15th year of BRICS. BRICS has taken many new initiatives during India's Chairship. Called for BRICS to contribute to post-COVID global recovery on the motto 'Build-back Resiliently, Innovatively, Credibly, and sustainably'.”

“We discussed important regional and global issues. Thanked BRICS partners whose support helped India's chair achieve many firsts. BRICS agenda now spans culture and communications; sports and space; disaster resilience and digital health; employment and environment, and more,” he further said.

The BIRCS summit, held annually since 2009, involves 5 of the major emerging economies Brazil, India, Russia, China, and South Africa.
