Subodh Kumar Jaiswal: Know all about the new CBI chief

The Centre had forwarded a list of three senior IPS officers for the position- Subodh Jaiswal, YC Modi, and Rakesh Asthana. Modi and Asthana lost the race after CJI Ramana pointed out that no officer with less than six months to retirement can be appointed as police chief in view of the Supreme Court judgement in the Prakash Singh case of March 2019.

Senior IPS officer Subodh Kumar Jaiswalwas on Tuesday appointed as the new Director of India's premier crime probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigative (CBI).  Prior to his appointment as the new CBI chief, Jaiswal was serving as the director-general of the  Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The Central government-appointed Subodh Jaiswal as the new CBI chief following a series of meetings by the three-member high-powered selection committee comprising of PM Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, and the Leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Who is Subodh Jaiswal?

  • Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is an Indian Police Officer (IPS) officer of the 1985 batch from the Maharashtra cadre.
 
  • He has held various esteemed offices in the past. Born in Jharkhand, he holds a Bachelor's degree in English from DAV College in Chandigarh and an MBA from Panjab University.

Previous Experience: 
 
  • During a career that has spanned 35 years, Jaiswal has been known as a low-profile officer who has donned many hats in Maharashtra and on central deputation.
 
  • In 1986, he started his career as an Additional Superintendent of Police, Amravati, Maharashtra.
 
  • In 2018, then Maharashtra chief Minister Davendra Fadnavis picked Jaiswal to be the Mumbai Police Commissioner. He served there from June 2018 to February 2019.
 
  • He went on to become the Maharashtra Director General of Police before being called on central deputation again.
 
  • Before being chosen for the CBI role, he was serving as the Director-General Director-General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

High-profile cases handled by him:
 

  • In Maharashtra, he probed the Telgi stamp paper scam case before it was taken over by the CBI. He then headed the State Reserve Police Force, following which he joined the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad.
 
  • The veteran officer headed the Maharashtra State Intelligence Bureau at the time of the Mumbai terror attack of 2008. He closely liaised with US agencies in the aftermath of that incident.
 
  • It was under his supervision that the Elgar Parishad and Bhima Koregaon violence cases were investigated before being transferred to the NIA. 

His tenure as new CBI chief:
  • Jaiswal will be at the helm of the CBI for two years, or until further orders.
