Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to a hospital on Saturday after being removed from Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where he had been observing an indefinite hunger strike for more than 20 days.
The 59-year-old had been fasting to press for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak. His removal took place amid protests and slogan-shouting by activists of the Cockroach Janata Party, the group leading the agitation.
The police action came after the Delhi High Court directed that Wangchuk undergo daily medical examinations in view of his worsening health. Throughout the operation at Jantar Mantar, police repeatedly announced that the intervention was being carried out in compliance with the High Court's directions and because of Wangchuk's deteriorating health condition.
