RG Kar Tragedy: Medical Fraternity Takes to the Streets, Protest March Begins

The protest rally began from the Central Government Office complex and was to proceed to Swasthya Bhavan, the headquarters of the state's department of health.

Hundreds of doctors, including senior and junior physicians and medical students, hit the streets of Salt Lake on Wednesday to demand justice for the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital woman house-staff doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered in the medical campus.

The protest rally began from the Central Government Office complex and was to proceed to Swasthya Bhavan, the headquarters of the state's department of health.

One of the protesting doctors said, "The rally started from the CGO complex as the location of the special crime unit office of CBI, who are investigating the case, is in that complex.".

"Nearly a week has passed since the CBI people began their inquiry, but we have not heard any information about the case status. We initiated our rally from the CGO complex as a gentle reminder for our expectations to the CBI people," he said.

As the rally started, former R.G. Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who is under questioning in the case, was in the CBI office at the CGO complex.

Simultaneously, both the CGO complex and Swasthya Bhavan were given heavy security starting from Wednesday morning.

A strong force of police was there to accompany the marching brigade of protesters.

Those agitating held sway over keeping it peaceful, with sloganeering like "We wants Justice" and "Justice for R.G. Kar victim".

Protestors, holding posters, were demanding justice, with a speedy investigation and strict punishment for perpetrators.

The march was supposed to culminate at Swasthya Bhavan where a delegation of agitators would meet state health department's top brass and put forth a memorandum listing their demands.

According to the post-mortem report of the victim, 14 injury marks were found on the body.

The female doctor's body was recovered under mysterious situations in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. So far, only one person has been arrested in connection with the case.
