Renowned constitutional jurist and esteemed senior advocate Fali S. Nariman passed away in the city on Wednesday at the age of 95.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning over seven decades, Nariman became synonymous with landmark legal battles, leaving an indelible mark on India's legal landscape. Notable among his cases was his representation in the historic NJAC verdict, where he played a pivotal role. Additionally, he was involved in significant cases such as the SC AoR Association case, which shaped the collegium system, and the TMA Pai case, concerning the scope of minority rights under Article 30 of the Constitution, among others.
His contributions to the legal fraternity were further recognized through his appointment as Additional Solicitor General of India in May 1972. In acknowledgment of his exceptional service, Nariman was honored with the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
Beginning his legal journey after enrolling as an advocate of the Bombay High Court in November 1950, Nariman's career trajectory was marked by unwavering dedication and unparalleled expertise. He transitioned to the Supreme Court, where he continued to shape legal discourse and uphold the principles of justice until his passing.
