It will also strengthen the understanding on weather and climate processes and data on air quality so that in due course, good strategies can be devised for handling weather and undertaking intervention.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the mission in September 2024. The mission sought to enhance India's weather and climate-related science, research, and services, which would empower stakeholders, including citizens and last-mile users, in addressing extreme weather events and impacts of climate change.
