PM Modi and French President Macron Voice 'Grave Concerns' on Red Sea Conflict Escalation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed "grave concerns" about the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly in the Red Sea, according to a joint statement issued on Friday night. The leaders called for the protection of freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and emphasized the importance of adhering to international maritime law.

The statement highlighted the leaders' condemnation of a terrorist attack on Israel in October, expressing solidarity with the Israeli people. They emphasized the need to respect international humanitarian law, called for a humanitarian ceasefire, and advocated for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. The leaders reaffirmed the necessity of a political process leading to a two-state solution for lasting peace and stability in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In addition to concerns about the Middle East, Modi and Macron expressed deep concern over the war in Ukraine and its humanitarian consequences. They called for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the impact on the global economic system and food security, particularly affecting developing and least developed countries.

Both leaders unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism, and pledged to stand together against this global menace. They emphasized the need for concerted action against all terrorists, including individuals affiliated with groups listed by the UN Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee. The statement also stressed the importance of upholding international standards on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism in line with Financial Action Task Force recommendations.
