BJP MP Tapir Gao has accused the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of kidnapping a 17-year-old boy from Upper Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh. MP Gao posted on Twitter that the teen, Miram Taron, was kidnapped in the Lungta Jor area, inside the Indian territory on Tuesday, i.e., 18th January.

Miram Taron is a local hunter in the Zido village. The PLA also attempted to kidnap his friend Johny Yaiying, but he escaped. Yaiying then went on to inform the local authorities about the abduction, PTI quoted Gao as saying. The incident took place near the area where Siang River (Brahmaputra in Assam) enters Arunachal Pradesh from Tibet. The MP has demanded immediate intervention from the central authorities to expedite the release of the teen. According to Gao, he has notified Minister of Stata for Home, Shri Nisith Pramanik, the details of the case and has requested him for swift action.  Gao also tagged the prime minister as well as the home minister and the defence minister in his Twitter post.

Back in September 2020, the PLA had kidnapped five boys from Upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh who were then released a week later. China claims Arunachal as a part of its own territory and has recently released revised names of 15 places in the state to reinforce its claim. Last month, six MPs from across political parties, members of the All-Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet, had attended a reception by Tibet Parliament-in exile to which the Chinese embassy had written them to refrain from supporting Tibetan forces. The MPs had criticised the Chinese letter as immature and unwarranted given China has no locus-standi on India’s internal matters.
