Atiq Ahmed, brother gunned down in front of police, media

Atiq and his brother were shot when they were taken for a medical test to the Colvin hospital here. Both died on the spot. According to reports, Atiq was shot in the head from point-blank range when the mediapersons were talking to him. Both the brothers were handcuffed when the incident took place. All the three shooters have been arrested by the UP Police. They have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny.

Basing strict 'bandobast' on an intelligence input, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav made heavy deployment of police in Talwandi Sabo, especially around the 'pandal' set up by Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) where member of parliament Simranjit Singh Mann was to deliver a speech.
India reports 27 Covid deaths in 24 hrs, highest in 6 months

The last time India recorded 20 or more Covid deaths was on October 15, 2022. The country's overall death toll has now increased to 5,31,091. According to the data, Delhi reported six deaths, followed by four in Maharashtra, three in Rajasthan, and one each in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The figure also includes six deaths that were reconciled by Kerala.

SC collegium recommends elevation of 3 judicial officers as judges of Delhi HC

The collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K.M. Joseph, in its recommendation dated April 12, recommended the elevation of Girish Kathpalia, Dharmesh Sharma, and Manoj Jain, as Judges of the High Court of Delhi.
India logs 11,109 new Covid cases

The country's active caseload stands at 49,622, while the active cases are at 0.11 per cent. With 6,456 patients discharged from the hospital during the same period, the total recoveries have risen to 4,42,16,583. The recovery rate is being pegged at 98.70 per cent.
Asad & Ghulam fired with intent to kill, says FIR

The encounter took place on Thursday. The FIR says, "Just as we instructed our car driver to overtake the motorcycles the two accused were trying to flee in, and loudly asked them to stop, they accelerated and tried to take a turn at a side road to escape, though another team had already surrounded them." The two were repeatedly warned but they did not stop and their motorcycles slipped and fell near a babool tree.

Nagarathna told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Karnataka government: "Prima facie, we are telling you, the first thing is that the order which you have passed... appears to suggest that foundation of decision making process is highly shaky and flawed... it is on an interim report, the state could have waited for a final report that is one aspect. What is the great urgency?"
PMs Modi, Sunak agree on need for early conclusion of trade talks

India deploys Shatrujeet Brigade close to LAC in fresh round of multi-domain military exercise

Ex Vayu Prahar was a 96-hour multi-domain air-land exercise conducted during the second week of March. It involved insertion and extraction of the Army's Special Forces at a designated Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) by C-130J Super Hercules and C-17 Globemasters of the IAF. The latest exercise involved both tactical fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft of the IAF to land/drop Special Forces in designated areas for 'undertaking kinetic actions to provide surge to ongoing operations by regular land forces', the Army's Eastern Command revealed on Thursday.
