A Nagpur Municipal Corporation team went to the house of Fahim Khan in bulldozers to raze an illegal structure. Officials affirmed that Khan had been served previous notices pointing to several violations, such as no approval for a valid building plan. Khan never took any action despite these alerts, which led to the razing of his house.
Fahim Khan, the leader of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP) as well, has been accused of sedition along with five others. He was taken into custody and put in judicial custody until March 21.
And while this is happening, the Nagpur Police have filed an investigation against over 300 social media accounts for their alleged role in recent riots. Out of these, 140 accounts were found to have objectionable content in the form of posts and videos. Cases against the accounts involved are being filed.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) revealed that some of the objectionable content was traced back to an account that was running from outside of Nagpur. "There were some posts which supported the riots, and we are probing this account also, whether it is from abroad or not. We are also probing the social media account of Fahim Khan, the prime accused, and we have found objectionable material there too. The cyber wing has also filed a case in connection with this," the DCP further stated.
Four FIRs have so far been lodged in relation to the Nagpur riots, with more than 50 charges registered. Officials have stated that more FIRs will be lodged as the investigation unfolds.
Maharashtra Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly asserted his position on the matter. He said that the expenses of the damages to the property during the violence would be recovered from the violent crowd. If they are unable to pay, their properties would be confiscated and sold through auctions to recoup the losses.
"My government will leave no stone unturned to find the culprits of the attack on the police and deal with them firmly," Fadnavis insisted, reiterating the government's determination to ensure law and order.
