Sahil Shukla, Muskan Rastogi's boyfriend, would gamble on her husband Saurabh Rajput's money, according to a report as new details in the Meerut murder case continue to surface.
The Hindustan Times, citing police department officials, said that Sahil gambled on the victim's money playing cricket matches and then spent the winnings on Muskan and himself to fund their lavish lifestyle.
By the bookies whose identities are currently under investigation, Sahil laid his bets, according to the sources quoted in the paper.
In addition, he spent the money he earned on Muskan's and his trips to Rishikesh and Dehradun. Sahil was mostly sustained by his gambling earnings, as per his neighbors, who were also part of the story, since he did not have a regular job and no other dependable source of income.
As per the report, quoting police sources, Saurabh used to send Muskan more than Rs 1 lakh a month to settle her and their daughter's bills. She would then tell this to Sahil, who would use the money to make bets. Before his arrest and detention, Sahil had been wagering on Indian Premier League matches for years and intended to make more bets on the upcoming season, said the police. Once the woman admitted to having killed her husband Saurabh, a Merchant Navy officer, and cut his body into fifteen pieces, Sahil and Muskan were arrested. When her parents brought her to the police station, she confessed to having committed more graphic acts with her lover Sahil and accomplice.
As per news agency PTI, Sahil and Muskan were said to be finding it difficult to adjust life in jail. The two were showing symptoms of drug withdrawal, according to prison officials. Muskan Rastogi and her boyfriend Sahil Shukla have been held at Chaudhary Charan Singh district jail since March 19 after a court directed their 14-day judicial custody.
The pair requested to stay in the same barrack, but were informed that it was not permitted due to regulations.
Muskan's family is upset with her, and she has also asked for a government lawyer. Jail authorities say the two have been showing signs of intense distress. Sahil and Muskan are not sleeping well. They are also not eating and drinking, according to a source quoted by PTI.
Jail authorities attribute it to withdrawal from drugs, but others are of the view that it may be a manifestation of remorse.
