Heavy rainfall and poor visibility led to a major disruption in CSIA, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, on Monday. Twenty-seven flights were diverted and a large number were delayed. CSIA officials said that the flights had been diverted to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore, as the incoming flights were accommodated first, leading to delays in outbound schedules.
The Airport Authority requested that all passengers check the status of their flights before leaving home. "Due to heavy rains and low visibility, runway operations were suspended from 2:22 am to 3:40 am. There have been 27 flight diversions," CSIA said. With the weather still inclement and a forecast by the Meteorological Department of sustained heavy rainfall, CSIA asked travelers to keep themselves updated with their respective airlines and plan to reach the airport ahead of schedule than usual.
IndiGo and Air India came forward to provide options of rebooking on other flights or full refunds to the passengers. IndiGo posted, "Due to heavy rains impacting flights to/from Mumbai, passengers can opt for alternative flights or seek a full refund through our ground team." Air India posted, "Flight operations affected due to heavy rains in Mumbai. We are offering full refunds or rescheduling options for flights booked on 8th July."
SpiceJet and Vistara have issued advisories asking passengers to keep a close watch on the status of their flights before heading out to the airport, as disruptions might arise due to inclement weather conditions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that authorities are working for the restoration of disrupted train and road services amid widespread flooding and asked the residents of Mumbai to stay at home, considering the safety of the people.
