Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday embarked on a three-day official visit to Russia and Austria. In the first leg of his visit, PM Modi arrived in Moscow to take part in the 22nd Annual Summit with Russia. Mr Modi said he is looking forward to his meeting with President Vladimir Putin. "Over the next three days, I will be visiting Russia and Austria, " PM Modi posted on his social media account.
He said these visits are important for deepening relations with time-tested friends of India. In an apparent reference to the Indian Diaspora, PM Modi added that he is also looking forward to interact with the Indian communities in both countries. In his departure statement, PM Modi said, "The past decade has seen the transformation of the India-Russia relations into a Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Relations in the areas of energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges have gained momentum.".
"I look forward to a comprehensive review of our bilateral cooperation with President Vladimir Putin and the exchange of views on regional and global issues. We will work towards a peaceful and stable region," PM Modi added. He also noted his upcoming interaction with the vibrant Indian community in Russia. The Prime Minister arrived in Moscow late afternoon, where President Putin hosted a private dinner for him on Monday night.
Tuesday's schedule has homage to be paid at the tomb of the unknown soldier in the Kremlin and a visit to the Rosatom Pavilion at the exhibition venue in Moscow. Restricted-level talks and delegation-level discussions between PM Modi and President Putin will follow thereafter.
Later in the afternoon on Tuesday, PM Modi is scheduled to leave for Vienna. He is likely to call on President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer of Austria. “Austria is our steadfast and reliable partner and we share the ideals of democracy and pluralism. This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in over 40 years. I look forward to my discussions to take our partnership to even greater heights in new and emerging areas of innovation, technology and sustainable development among others,” the PM said.
“Together with the Austrian Chancellor, I look forward to exchanging views with business leaders from both sides to explore mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities. I will also be interacting with the Indian community in Austria which is well regarded for their professionalism and conduct,” the PM added.
