KFC India issues apology for Pakistani counterpart’s social media post on Kashmir

“You never left our thoughts and we hope that the coming years bring peace to you!” the post on Facebook from KFC Pakistan handle read. “Kashmir Belongs To The Kashmiris,” the picture captioned. It was posted on 5th February, which is observed as ‘Kashmir Day’. This evoked protests from Indian netizens who expressed their anger by trending #BoycottKFC on twitter. The post was deleted after it went viral.  

The Indian subsidiary of American fast food giant KFC has apologized for the posts on social media by its Pakistani counterpart which called for displaying solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

KFC India tendered an apology via its official twitter handle. “We deeply apologize for a post that was published on some KFC social media channels outside the country. We honour and respect India, and remain steadfast in our commitment to serving all Indians with pride,” the statement read.

This comes a day after similar protests by netizens against a pro-separatist post on Kashmir by Hyundai Pakistan on twitter which had led to a huge backlash among Indians. Hyundai India issued a clarification which was criticized by social media users for being unempathetic towards Indian sovereignty and popular nationalism. Hyundai India has however today issued another clarification. “As a business policy, Hyundai Motor Company does not comment on political or religious issues in any specific region… Once the situation was brought to our attention, we made the distributor acutely aware of the inappropriateness of the action…We deeply regret any offence caused to the people of India by this unofficial social media activity,” the statement issued by the company on twitter read.
