Jaishankar's Dialogue with UK Foreign Secretary Cameron on West Asia Dynamics

During a recent exchange, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his British counterpart David Cameron regarding the evolving circumstances in West Asia, particularly concerning the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

The conversation between Jaishankar and Cameron, conducted over the phone, occurred on the same day when the Iranian military seized a cargo vessel with Israeli affiliations near the Strait of Hormuz. Notably, the vessel housed 17 Indian crew members.

In a statement shared on 'X', Jaishankar remarked, "Spoke to UK Foreign Secretary Lord @David_Cameron today. Discussed the emerging situation in West Asia as also our bilateral ties."

Heightened concerns have emerged that Tehran might retaliate against Israel following an attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria twelve days ago, an incident for which Iran squarely blamed Israel.

Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari emphasized, "Iran will bear the consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further."

In a separate development, US President Joe Biden issued a cautionary statement to Iran on Friday, warning against any attack on Israel. He stated emphatically, "We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel. We will defend -- help defend Israel. And Iran will not succeed," during a press briefing.

Additionally, India issued advisories on Friday, urging its citizens to refrain from traveling to Iran and Israel amidst the heightened tensions in the region.
