Jaishankar Asserts: No Need to Fear China, Global Politics is a Competitive Game

In a discussion at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Mumbai, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed several key issues, ranging from India's relations with China to the country's involvement in the Red Sea region and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of acknowledging China's influence on India's neighbors but emphasized that New Delhi shouldn't fear such "competitive politics." Referring to the strained ties with the Maldives, he stressed the significance of neighbors working together despite challenges.

Regarding China's growing influence in the region, Jaishankar rejected the notion that it reflects a failure of Indian diplomacy. He suggested that competition is a natural aspect of global politics, and India should not be afraid of it. He encouraged embracing competition and showcasing India's ability to compete on the international stage.

Discussing India's proactive role in the Red Sea region, particularly in response to piracy and drone attacks, Jaishankar asserted that India must be seen as a responsible country. He highlighted the Indian Navy's deployment of warships in the region and expressed India's commitment to helping those in distress.

Addressing the Maldives situation, where the new President is perceived as pro-China, Jaishankar urged trust in Indian diplomacy. He emphasized that every country faces challenges in its neighborhood, and India's job is to anticipate, assess, and respond.

On the West Asia crisis, Jaishankar reiterated India's support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. He labeled the Hamas incursions into Israel as a terrorist attack and stressed the importance of recognizing international laws to avoid civilian casualties in responding to such situations.
