INS Vagir Submarine commissioned: Major boost to Indian Navy's ISR and Special Operations

According to the Navy, INS Vagir will enhance the Navy's ability to safeguard India's maritime interests, deter enemies, and conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The submarine's name, Vagir, which means sand shark, represents stealth and fearlessness, qualities that align with the submariner's ethos.

The Indian Navy welcomed a new addition to its fleet on Monday with the commissioning of INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari Class. The submarine was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in India, with technology transferred from France. The ceremony was attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar.

INS Vagir is equipped with advanced sensors and a formidable weapons package, including wire-guided torpedoes and sub-surface to surface missiles capable of neutralizing a large enemy fleet. Additionally, the submarine is capable of launching marine commandos for special operations, and its powerful diesel engines allow for quick battery charging during stealth missions.

To defend itself, the submarine is equipped with a state-of-the-art torpedo decoy system. The commissioning of INS Vagir comes at a time when the Chinese Navy is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean.
