INS Dhruv: 5 key features of India’s most advanced naval warships

India is set to launch its first satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship on Friday. Built by the Hindustan Shipyard in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), the INS Dhruv is the latest addition to the Indian Navy's arsenal. The 10,000-tonne naval ship will be commissioned from the Vishakhapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh in the presence of senior officials from the Navy. The DRDO, and the NTRO, will also be present at the inception among others. The ship is equipped with multiple advanced features that make it a state-of-the-art warship in modern naval. Only France, the US, the UK, Russia, and China, make and operate vessels like INS Dhruv, making India a part of the elite groups.

India’s inception of the INS Dhruv has gained prominence since both China and Pakistan currently have nuclear ballistic capabilities. Moreover, both the countries currently harbor territorial disputes against India. However, India gains a major boost as it can now focus on its military operations better across all three dimensions.

Here are 5 key points about the INS Dhruv Naval warship:

  • INS Dhruv is India’s first naval vessel to track enemy nuclear missiles from a long range. With the increasing threat of nuclear warfare around the Indo-Pacific region, this features gains significance.
 
  • The INS Dhruv comes with actively scanned array radar (AESA), developed by the DRDO. This will enable it to monitor spy satellites watching over India.
 
  • With its anti-ballistic missile capabilities, it will act as a blanket and will alert with an early warning system for enemy missiles headed towards Indian cities and military establishments.
