India on Thursday became the third country after the United States and Brazil to hit the 4 million mark in deaths caused by Covid-19. With six lakh deaths, the US is at the top of the list followed by Brazil with 5.2 lakh due to the coronavirus.
However, India’s death rate remains the lowest among the top 10 worst-hit countries in the world. Those with the highest fatality rate are Peru with 5,765 deaths per million; Mexico with 1,789 deaths per million; Brazil with 2,421 deaths per million; Italy with 2,113 deaths per million.
India has 287 deaths per million rate, which is considerably lower than all the other countries with the most cases and deaths. Currently, 6,00,000 people have died due to coronavirus in the USA. In Brazil, 5,20,000 people have died from the virus. Mexico and Peru follow India on 4th and 5th number with 2,30,000 and 1,90,000 deaths respectively. The others with five-figure death tolls are Russia, the UK, Italy, France and Colombia.

Among Asia’s other big countries, India’s death rate is higher. Only Nepal’s 308 deaths per million trump India’s toll. In countries like the Philippines and Indonesia’s death per million ratio is between 200-300. Meanwhile, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka’s death per million ratios are between 100-200. Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand have a ratio of less than 100.
Among 121 countries with a population of more than 5 million, there are 54 nations that have reported higher deaths per million as compared to India. The ratio is lower than India for 66 of these countries, according to data estimates from Johns Hopkins University.
India’s second Covid wave proved to be more severe than the first one as a sudden shortage of oxygen and healthcare facilities hiked the fatality rate. However, India did manage to cope with the wave and significantly boosted the healthcare facilities overall.
On June 29, India recorded 37,566 cases, the lowest since March 18. The active cases have now come down below 6 lakh. The country has 5,09,637 active cases presently.
