Indian Army marked the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas with touching tributes and national commemoration events, paying homage to the valour and sacrifices of troops who gave their lives in the 1999 Kargil war.
The main ceremony took place at the legendary Kargil War Memorial in Dras, where Union Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Sanjay Seth, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta, and newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi were present.
In honor of the 545 war casualties, the ceremony was graced by their relatives, recipients of gallantry awards, and senior-ranking military officials. The ceremonies started on July 25 with a Battle Remembrance activity at Lamochen Viewpoint, where warfront personal narratives were shared both by veterans and active duty personnel.
A highlight of the event that was also emotional in nature, the 'Shaurya Sandhya' ceremony, involved the lighting of 545 lamps—one for each hero who fell—accompanied by a poignant musical rendition by the Army band and multi-faith prayers to mark unity and remembrance.
July 26 witnessed the somber Wreath Laying Ceremony at the memorial. Speaking at the event, General Dwivedi commended the unflinching valour of the Indian troops and reiterated the Army's unstinting commitment to protecting national peace and security.
He also highlighted recent precision operations conducted under Operation Sindoor and described the Army's ongoing transformation. This entails newly organized units like 'Rudra' all-arms brigades, 'Bhairav' light commando battalions, 'Shaktibaan' artillery regiments, 'Divyastra' missile and drone battalions, and indigenous air defence technologies.
A few legacy projects were also launched, such as the picturesque Indus Viewpoint in Batalik sector, an e-Shradhanjali portal and a QR-coded Audio Gateway for tourists at the memorial.
A Capability Display showcased the Army's progress in indigenous defence technologies—ranging from surveillance systems, firepower innovations and new-generation drone warfare.
In a special outreach program, Army officials went door to door to the residences of each and every 545 martyrs in India and Nepal to pay tribute. The tributes also reached out to cultural activities, cyber campaigns, and youth-oriented activities that brought alive the narrative of the Kargil War and infused patriotic fervour.
As dusk fell upon the barren mountains of Dras, the Kargil War Memorial glowed in the hues of the Indian tricolour as a beaming tribute to valour, solidarity, and the indomitable spirit of offering one's life.
