India Reports 3,422 Active COVID-19 Cases in Latest Update

The number of daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, 2023, but a new sub-variant, JN.1, and cold weather conditions led to an increase in cases.

India recorded 514 new cases of COVID-19, and the number of active cases has decreased to 3,422, according to the health ministry's latest update. In the past 24 hours, three deaths have been reported—two in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka.

The number of daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, 2023, but a new sub-variant, JN.1, and cold weather conditions led to an increase in cases. After December 5, the highest single-day rise was 841 new cases on December 31, 2023, representing 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Around 92% of the total active cases are recovering under home isolation. The available data suggests that the JN.1 sub-variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases, hospitalization, or mortality, according to official sources.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the delta wave peaking in April-June 2021. The peak incidence during this wave saw 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths reported on May 7, 2021. The national recovery rate stands at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore people having recovered from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines to date.
