In a bid to isolate Russia, Germany to woo PM Modi with G-7 invitation

This invitation is backed with the idea to isolate Russia and form a broader international alliance against Russia, news agency Bloomberg reported. The report also says that Germany will also welcome the leaders of Indonesia, South Africa and Senegal. However, Germany is yet to make a formal announcement in this regard. Scholz is expected to announce the decision during the bilateral talks with PM Modi in Berlin on Monday.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the special guest to the G-7 meeting in the Bavarian Alps from June 26 to June 28. This invitation is backed with the idea to isolate Russia and form a broader international alliance against Russia, news agency Bloomberg reported. The report also says that Germany will also welcome the leaders of Indonesia, South Africa and Senegal. However, Germany is yet to make a formal announcement in this regard. Scholz is expected to announce the decision during the bilateral talks with PM Modi in Berlin on Monday.

1. Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was uncertain of PM Modi's invitation because of India's stance on Russia amid Russia Ukraine war, according to Bloomberg report. But now the German Chancellor has decided to invite PM Modi in the G-7 meeting.

2. Acknowledging India's significance in view of its growing population and largest democracy, the country is potentially valuable to Europe in their effort to isolate Russia.  Additionally, Scholz hopes to work closely in other policy areas such as climate change and defense.

4. In their meeting, PM Modi, and Scholz will discuss how to accelerate technology transfer to India in order to reduce climate-damaging carbon emissions and how Germany can further ease immigration rules for skilled workers from India.

5. To mitigate India's dependence on Russian weapons, Germany also wants European defense companies to offer India an alternative to Russian weapons.

6. Amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Germany wants to strengthen its political and economic ties to democratic countries of the world.

7. India abstained from voting against Russia from the UN Human Rights Council in April. While G-7 countries- the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan,Canada and Germany have imposed many sanctions on Russia.
