The Indian Medical Association Wednesday announced the suspension of Sandip Ghosh, former principal, R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, following the tragic incident on August 9 of the recovery of the body of a junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the hospital where Ghosh was principal.
A statement issued by the IMA said, "The parents of the victim told the said in a letter to an IMA delegation which went to West Bengal in the beginning of this month." The parents blamed Ghosh for handling the case and also mentioned his "severe deficiency in empathy and proper response" in the case.
This suspension is the second professional body acting against Ghosh. Earlier, on August 18, the West Bengal Orthopaedic Association announced it would keep Ghosh out of all association-related academic activities. This was after his role in the R.G. Kar case came out into the open.
The WBOA communiqué brought forth Ghosh's accountability for standing in loco parentis to students and postgraduate trainees. The case, as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court, was transferred to the CBI, and Ghosh is under CBI investigation. The WBOA decision to keep itself away from Ghosh remains until the completion of the CBI inquiry with a final court judgment.
