Government Freezes Indus Water Treaty, Demands End to Cross-Border Terrorism

Though the ministry reaffirmed India's long-standing position regarding the treaty by suspending it, this message acquires greater significance in light of Pakistan's recent appeal requesting India to review the 1960 treaty, emphasizing the dependence of millions on the waters under its jurisdiction.

The Indus Waters Treaty will remain suspended "until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism," the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has told the cabinet secretary in its monthly report.

In a report presented to Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan on Tuesday, Jal Shakti Ministry Secretary Debashree Mukherjee explained the government had announced the treaty would be put in "abeyance" with immediate effect following the "Pakistan-sponsored" terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam.

"The vital water-sharing treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan abjures credibly and irrevocably its patronage of cross-border terrorism," she underscored in the report.
