Devkinandan Thakur, the renowned Hindu spiritual guru, has written a letter to the United Nations appealing to the body to form an independent country for Hindus of Bangladesh if they are unable to assure their safety.
This was after the arrest of prominent spokesperson of Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was detained under sedition charges.
The arrest came following allegations by former Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader Firoze Khan, claiming that Das had disrespected the national flag of the country.
The denial of bail for Das has sparked protests across Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The UN was founded to stand up for humanity when attacked, but it is silent now," Thakur said to IANS. "Here, in Bangladesh, Das' lawyers are beaten up, and Hinduism has been unleashed, with women and children being attacked, and houses are being burnt. And this cruelty must concern the UN."
He also demanded an international intervention urging that, if Bangladesh govt failed to safeguard its Hindu population the UN needs to provide for a state of its own.
" Hindus sacrificed themselves for forming Bangladesh. I shall not allow tortures towards them," added Thakur.
Meanwhile, the judicial process against Chinmoy Krishna Das has seen a Bangladesh court scheduling another hearing on January 2, 2025. Das is likely to spend further days in jail on alleged sedition charges till that date.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned this denial of bail to Das during his arrest.
ISKCON, on its part, has said that it is worried, saying two monks and the secretary of Das have been taken into Bangladeshi custody.
Petition filed to bar ISKCON in Bangladesh A related development is that of a petition filed to prohibit ISKCON in Bangladesh on allegations that the body incited communal unrest, with such claims further fueling tension in the region.
ISKCON Kolkata Vice President Radharaman also demanded extra security for Das's lawyer following the attack on a former advocate.
