Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that India's defence production has shot to a record of ₹1.5 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024-25.
This represents a nearly 18% jump over the last fiscal year's production of ₹1.27 lakh crore.
"The defence production of ₹1,50,590 crore in the financial year 2024-25 is a record high and historic figure," Singh said in an X post.
He further added, "These figures reflect a strong 18 per cent year-on-year growth over the last fiscal's production of ₹1.27 lakh crore, and a phenomenal 90 per cent growth since 2019-20, when the level was ₹79,071 crore."
Singh praised the "collective efforts" of the Department of Defence Production, defence public sector units (DPSUs), and the private sector, calling this feat a "landmark." He pointed out that the upward trend indicates India's defence industrial base has become stronger.
An official announcement disclosed that DPSUs and other public sector undertakings accounted for approximately 77% of total output, while the private sector contributed 23%. The proportion of the private sector went up from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, signifying its increasing share in the nation's defense market.
Both the private and public segments registered consistent year-on-year growth, driven by widespread policy reforms, increased ease of doing business, and concerted efforts toward indigenization in the last decade. DPSUs' production increased by 16% in FY 2024-25, whereas the output of the private sector increased by 28%.
The focus of the government on curbing import dependence and fostering a strong defence industrial complex—able to supply domestic requirements and enhance export potential—has borne fruit.
Defence exports were also at an all-time high ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, up by ₹2,539 crore or 12.04% from ₹21,083 crore in FY 2023-24.
