Covid 19 second wave likely to end in July, third wave may hit after 6 months: Govt panel

The three-member panel of scientists set up by the Department of Science and Technology further predicted that by the end of May, the country is expected to register about 1.5 lakh covid 19 positive cases per day and by the end of July, cases will decline to 20,000 cases per day, India Today reported. The prediction made by the scientists is based on SUTRA (Susceptible, Undetected, Tested (positive) and Removed Approach) model.

The second wave of Covid-19 in India is likely to end in July but there is a possibility of a third wave hitting the country after six to eight months, according to a panel of scientists set up by the Central government.

The prediction made by the scientists is based on SUTRA (Susceptible, Undetected, Tested (positive) and Removed Approach) model, a mathematical model that helps to project the trajectory of COVID-19.

According to the model, a third and more dangerous wave is expected to hit the country in six to eight months after tbe second wave ends.

Professor Manindra Agarwal from IIT Kanpur told India Today that phase 3 of the pandemic will be localized and won’t affect many people due to immunity from vaccination.

K VijayRaghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser, had said on May 5 that as the virus mutates further, the third wave of COVID infection is inevitable and it is necessary for the government to be prepared for it. However, he also said the arrival of the third wave can be delayed, if strong measures are taken and effectively implemented at the state, district, and city levels.
