CBI officials investigating the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata said evidence tampering was the focal point in the case.
Sources said the theory that if rape and murder were committed by a few, the criminality of evidence tampering involved many.
As such, the CBI is trying to find proof of evidence tampering to bring the agency closer to unmasking the truth behind the RG Kar rape and murder case.
The viral video is one of the important pieces of evidence to this probe, showing close confidants of former principal RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh, inside the seminar hall hardly five minutes after recovery of the body of the victim on the fateful morning of August 9. The body of the victim has not been captured in the video.
However, IANS has been unable to verify the authenticity of the viral video.
Sources said though the Kolkata Police has claimed that the major portion of the seminar hall was cordoned off after the body's recovery, CBI officials are not convinced. According to protocol, the entire seminar hall should have been considered the "scene of crime" and hence, instead of cordoning off only a portion of it, the entire hall should have been secured, barring the entry of others.
IOs of the central agency are also probing the recent circulation of letters on fake CBI letterheads on social media, where purported central agency 'officials' have commented on various aspects of the case.
Sources said IOs believe that such fake letters are being deliberately circulated to mislead and misinform people about the investigation process.
The CBI officials are trying to reach the source of such fake letters which can get them near the truth behind the main crime.
The CBI sleuths are also scrutinizing the calls made from or received on the mobile phone of Sandip Ghosh immediately after the body was found. IOs are trying to ascertain what the conversations were about and whether Ghosh had passed on any information or issued any instructions in connection with the tragedy that morning.
