Delhi Pollution: Bad air days reduces in by 70, says Prakash Javadekar

"We (BJP) came to power in 2014 and we started keeping this (bad air day) count from 2016. In 2016, Delhi used to have 250 bad air days and now it has reduced by 70 days to 180," the minister said. 

The Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday said that the 'Bad Air Days' in Delhi have reduced by 70 days since 2016, even as Delhi pollution is on a steady rise.

The Minister while interacting with people during a Facebook Live event, said that the days of poor air quality have reduced from 250 in 2016 to 180 this year in Delhi.

"We (BJP) came to power in 2014 and we started keeping this (bad air day) count from 2016. In 2016, Delhi used to have 250 bad air days and now it has reduced by 70 days to 180," the minister said. 

In June last year, the minister had informed that “number of poor air quality days in Delhi in 2016 used to be 246, and in 2014 they used to be around 300, in 2017 it came down to 213 and now it has come down to 206."

While talking about the annual pollution spike in Delhi, Javadekar said that stubble burning for 40 days adds to the issue. He also holds Uttar Pradesh and Haryana responsible for the toxic air in the capital.

Mr. Javadekar said that 50 pollution control teams have been sent to UP and Haryana to check on the stubble burning.

Delhi adopts various ways to tackle pollution such as the odd-even vehicle scheme.

Delhi air had plummeted to the "severe-plus emergency" category the morning after Diwali in 2018.
