Army Commando Killed, Two Soldiers Injured in Udhampur Encounter Following Pahalgam Attack

The firing exchange occurred in the Dudu-Basantgarh area during a cordon and search operation initiated after receiving intelligence inputs regarding terrorist activity in the region, officials said.

One Indian Army soldier was killed in an encounter that broke out with suspected terrorists during a search operation in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. 

The firing exchange occurred in the Dudu-Basantgarh area during a cordon and search operation initiated after receiving intelligence inputs regarding terrorist activity in the region, officials said.

Sharing details of the operation, the Indian Army's White Knight Corps posted a statement on X, adding, "A joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir Police was conducted today in Basantgarh, Udhampur, based on certain intelligence. Contact was made, and an intense firefight was engaged. One of our bravehearts received serious injuries in the initial contact and unfortunately passed away despite the best efforts at medical care. Operations are still ongoing."

This encounter came barely two days after terrorists struck a resort in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists lost their lives. In another case, Indian Army soldiers deployed at a forward position in Mendhar, Poonch, opened fire late on Wednesday night when they saw suspicious movement along the Line of Control (LoC). Defence officials said that an alert sentry detected the movement and reacted immediately, preventing what seemed to be an attempted infiltration.
