5 Tihar prisoners dead in 8 days,  probe ordered

Five prisoners have died in the last eight days at the high-security Tihar Jail in Delhi, a Delhi Police official told news agency IANS on Saturday.

The latest death was reported on Friday, the inmate was found unconscious in his cell and was immediately taken to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead. It was declared that the prisoner had died due to health issues and he was identified as Vikram alias Vicky.

The death of all the five inmates was not related and they took place in different sections of the Tihar jail and none of them were related to any kind of violence, the Director-General (Prisons) Sandeep Goyal told IANS.

"In all these, the circumstances indicate natural causes like old disease or other unknown reason," Goyal said. He further said that inquest proceedings are being conducted by Metropolitan Magistrate in each case.
