2020 Delhi riots: Dinesh Yadav, first convict in northeast Delhi riots

In the riots that broke out in northeastern Delhi in February 2020, a city court on Monday convicted Dinesh Yadav, a 25-year-old man on various charges, including ransacking and setting an elderly woman's house on fire. 2020 Delhi riots | Key points

 
1. As mentioned in the case, it was February 25, 2020 when a mob of rioters, somewhere around 150 to 200, attacked the 73-year-old woman's house when her family was not present at the house and looted all the domestic articles, including her buffalo.

2. Based on the old woman's statement, a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147, 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly for crime), 436 (mischief by fire or any explosive substance), 457 (house-breaking by night), 392 (punishment for robbery), 452 (house-trespass), and 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) was registered.

3. Leading the investigation, accused Dinesh disguised as Michal of Gokulpuri in Delhi was arrested on June 8, 2020. After the investigation, a case file was submitted in court and after the trial, the court found the accused guilty.

4. On November 25, a detailed affidavit was given to the Delhi High Court in connection with last year's riots, following the police's submission that charge sheets have been filed in 361 out of 758 cases. Delhi police also informed the court that 62 cases in relation with murders were transferred to the Crime Branch, for which 3 special dedicated SIT's were employed. Among these charge sheets, 67 have been framed as of October 4, the Delhi Police told the bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh.

It was the time when the then US President Donald Trump visited India for 'Namastey Trump' event that the riots broke out in northeast Delhi after clashes between anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and pro-CAA protesters took a violent turn. More than 50 people had died in the 2020 Delhi riots. Social networking site Facebook is credited to add fuel to the riots, as several provoking posts on the platform have gone viral.
