Narayen was born into a Telugu-speaking household in Hyderabad, India. He did his schooling at Hyderabad Public School. After that, he graduated from Osmania University’s University College of Engineering with a bachelor’s degree in electronics and communication engineering. He also did a Master's degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1986. Shantanu also pursued an MBA degree from the University of California and graduated in 1993.
He grew up in Hyderabad, India, as the second son of an American literature teacher and a plastics industry owner.
Narayen earned an honorary Doctor of Applied Science degree from Bowling Green State University on May 7, 2011.

In 1996, he co-founded the company Pictra Inc. Shantanu joined adobe Inc as a senior vice-president in the year 1998 and continued in the position till 2001. From 2001 to 2005 he was appointed as the executive vice-president of worldwide products.
In 2005, he was appointed president and chief operating officer.
In December 2007, Narayen was announced as the CEO after Bruce Chizen stepped down from the post. Under him, the company saw digital transformations like flagship programs of Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Acrobat/PDF – from the desktop to the cloud.
Under him, the company crossed $100 billion in market cap in the year 2018 and also joined Fortune 400 the same year for the first time.
The company was also ranked at 13th position in the Forbes Most Innovative Companies list.

In 2018, Narayen was ranked #12 on Fortune's "Businessperson of the Year" list and was deemed "Global Indian of the Year" in 2018 by The Economic Times of India.

Shantanu Narayen is married to Reni Narayen. The couple is blessed with two boys Arjun and Shravan Narayen.
