Viola Davis and her husband Julius Tennon have a deep connection in their relationship and always function in harmony with one another.
The couple, who have been together for more than 20 years, attended the Hollywood premiere of their new movie, G20, on March 27, where they told PEOPLE about their marriage. Though they have been together for decades, they said they don't adhere to any strict rules to keep their relationship healthy.
"We just don't, because we have such a lot of respect for each other and then both of us kinda have the same synergy," said Tennon, 71. "So it just works with us."
Davis, 59, agreed, adding their shared respect. "We have it like that," she said. "I tell you all the time, 'We're the one!'"
Their romance started back in 1999 on the set of City of Angels, a CBS drama, and wedded by 2003. In 2011, JuVee Productions was co-founded by them with which they produced G20 along with their male co-star as co-producers. The actress also has another daughter, Genesis, who followed them to the premiere of their film.
Davis has before now opened up about how they maintain their love life. Talking to PEOPLE in 2020, she exposed their nightly ritual of relaxing together. "We have together time every single morning when we get in the jacuzzi, and we have together time every night 'cause we get in the tub together," she said. "And we soak in the tub and we talk. Sometimes he falls asleep with his mouth open!"
In G20, Davis takes on the role of U.S. President Danielle Sutton, who is caught in the midst of a violent crisis when she attends the global G20 summit in South Africa with her two children. When a group of assailants tries to take world leaders hostage, Sutton has to make her way through the mayhem. Tennon also plays a central role in the movie as the CIA director.
For Davis, playing an action hero president was a liberating experience. "I love that it made me feel strong. I love feeling like my body was strong as a woman," she said to PEOPLE. "Each time you consider your body or glance at your body as a woman, it's all about male desirability. That's the only way that you view it. And you don't view it in the way of just being able to defend yourself. And it's enjoyable and it's empowering and it's freeing!"
G20 will be streaming on Prime Video from April 10.
