The Cannes Film Festival has announced its lineup for 2024, with one of the biggest offerings being a biopic about Donald Trump, named The Apprentice. Directed by Ali Abbasi, this drama will have its bow at the famous festival next May. First images of Sebastian Stan playing a young Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn were released shortly after the announcement. It will be pitted against other high-profile entries including Megalopolis by Adam Driver, Kinds of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos headlined by Emma Stone, Bird by Andrea Arnold, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez starring Selena Gomez, Anora by Sean Baker, David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, Coralie Fargeat's The Substance, and Jacob Elordi's Oh Canada. The festival opens with the film The Second Act with Léa Seydoux in the lead role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the official synopsis for The Apprentice describes the movie as "a dive into the underbelly of the American empire. It charts a young Donald Trump's ascent to power through a Faustian deal with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn." The film follows Trump in the '70s and '80s as he builds his real estate empire in New York.
The Apprentice will also star Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan as Fred Trump, Donald Trump's father, in addition to Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong. Several real figures who were factors in Trump's early career and eventual rise to prominence pop up in the film. Producers are Daniel Beckerman, Julianne Forde, Jacob Jerek, Louis Tisné and Ruth Treacy. Co-writers on the screenplay are Gabriel Sherman and Jennifer Stahl. The cinematography is by Kasper Tuxen.
First look at Stan as Trump has gone viral online, with many taken aback by how the actor resembled the former U.S. president. As such, one X user commented, "Well this should be interesting.", while another added, "The resemblance is uncanny. Who would have thought?
