Filmmaker Payal Kapadia made history on Saturday when her captivating drama, "All We Imagine as Light," clinched the prestigious Grand Prix award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
This achievement marked a significant milestone for Kapadia, as her feature directorial debut became the first Indian film in three decades and the first ever by an Indian female director to compete in the festival's main category.
The film, a mesmerizing blend of Malayalam and Hindi languages, revolves around Prabha, a nurse whose life takes an unexpected turn when she receives a gift from her long-estranged husband. Alongside Prabha's journey, the narrative intertwines with the struggles of her younger roommate, Anu, as they embark on a road trip to a coastal town, where the mystical forest serves as a backdrop for their dreams to unfold.
During its screening, "All We Imagine as Light" received an overwhelming response from the audience, culminating in an eight-minute standing ovation. International critics lauded Kapadia's adept storytelling skills, cementing her status as a rising talent in the global film industry.
A graduate of the renowned Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Kapadia gained recognition for her documentary "A Night of Knowing Nothing," which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and received the coveted Oeil d’or (Golden Eye) award. Additionally, her short film "Afternoon Clouds" was featured in Cinefondation, a platform dedicated to nurturing emerging filmmakers.
"All We Imagine As Light" is a collaborative effort between petit chaos from France and Chalk and Cheese Films from India, highlighting the growing synergy between the two film industries.
The esteemed jury, chaired by filmmaker Greta Gerwig, comprised luminaries from diverse backgrounds, including Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, Turkish actor-screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, and Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, among others. Their recognition of Kapadia's work underscores the universal appeal and artistic merit of "All We Imagine as Light."
