Stemming from the Hollywood acting core, Sean Penn has opened up on his evolved perspective about romance, revealing he does not expect to suffer heartbreak again for love.
"I'm just free. If I'm going to be in a relationship, I'm still going to be free, or I'm not going to be in it, and I'm not going to be hurting," the 63-year-old actor told The New York Times, via People.com.
"I don't feel I'll have my heart broken by romance again," said Penn, formerly wed to Madonna from 1985 to 1989.
In 1996 he was married to Robin Wright. With her, he has a daughter named Dylan Frances Penn and a son named Hopper Jack Penn. The couple turned their backs on each other and finally divorced in 2010. The next lady that Penn has been married to is the Australian actress Leila George in 2020. A divorce from her was finalized in April 2022, a year after marriage.
He has been romantically linked with Hollywood stars Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johansson, besides actress Olga Korotyayeva.
Talking of love life, Penn narrated the moments when "the first thing I see in the morning are eyes wondering what I'm going to do to make them happy that day. Rarely reciprocated."
"During one of my marriages, the background noise of life was a (Real) Housewives of Beverly Hills or another thing called Love Island. Not even being in the room — I'm not saying this to be cute — I was dying. I felt my heart, my brain shrinking," he said, describing it as "an assault."
Penn also said his "friends in the female department" taught him—him describing them as "beautiful, wonderful people, wonderful with their partners or wonderful on their own"—have shown him that relationships don't need to be dramatic or draining.
