According to the latest report from Netflix, "What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report", the streaming giant revealed some very interesting numbers about viewership trends over the July to December 2023 period.
In all, Netflix subscribers worldwide watched over 90 billion hours of content between July and December 2023. This emphatically points out the unrestrained popularity it holds. Particularly noteworthy, Indian cinema and series contributed more than a billion views on the platform.
The most-watched Indian movies included Sujoy Ghosh's "Jaane Jaan" in first place, racking up 20.2 million views; Shah Rukh Khan's "Jawan" in second place with 16.2 million views; and Vishal Bhardwaj's "Khufiya" in third place with 12.1 million views. Other notable shows included "OMG 2," "Lust Stories 2," "Dream Girl 2," and the nail-biting true crime documentary "Curry & Cyanide.
"In the realm of series, the poignant story set against the 1984 Bhopal Gas Leak, 'The Railway Men,' was quite a hit among fans. With stars Kay Kay Menon, Babil Khan, and Divyenndu, the series fetched a commendable 10.6 million views, tailed closely by "Kohraa," "Gun and Gulaabs," and "Kaala Paani.
"The report also highlighted that non-English content on Netflix accounted for nearly a third of all viewing. Some of the standout titles included "Dear Child" from Germany, "Forgotten Love" from Poland, "Pact of Silence" from Mexico, "Mask Girl" from Korea, "Yu Yu Hakusho" from Japan, and "Berlin" from Spain.
However, some of them cut across borders. "Leave the World Behind" was the most-watched movie, followed by Adam Sandler's animated feature "Leo." The anime-inspired live-action series "One Piece" fetched 72 million views.
These, on the other hand, include viewer-favorite originals such as "Wednesday," "Red Notice," and the groundbreaking "Squid Game," which continued to amaze audiences for a long time after its release, once again redefining Netflix as the world's prime entertainment powerhouse.
