Khatija Rahman, daughter of the music maestro A.R Rahman, is poised to make her international debut as she steps into the role of composing the soundtrack for the film ‘Lioness,’ a collaborative India-UK production helmed by filmmaker Kajri Babbar.
Marking her entry as a film composer with the upcoming Tamil film ‘Minmini,’ presently in the works, Khatija made her initial mark by releasing her debut single ‘Farishton’ in 2020, a composition produced by her Oscar-winning father. Her journey further extended to collaborations, featuring on Grammy Award-winning composer Ricky Kej’s track ‘Iltaja’ and teaming up with Tamil rapper-playback singer Arivu on the song ‘Sagavaasi.’
‘Lioness’ emerges as a drama that intertwines the lives of two distinct women separated by a century, as revealed by Variety. The narrative unfolds the story of suffragette Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, the granddaughter of the revered king Maharaja Ranjit Singh and god-daughter of Queen Victoria, portrayed by Paige Sandhu. Simultaneously, it introduces a fictional character, Simranjeet Kaur, inhabiting London’s Southall Asian suburb during the early 1990s, portrayed by Aditi Rao Hydari.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Khatija shared with the outlet, “Thrilled and honoured to be a part of ‘Lioness.’ I resonated deeply with the film’s narrative and the significance behind bringing this compelling story to life. Our aim is to ensure Princess Sophia’s arduous journey garners the overdue acknowledgment it rightfully deserves.”
A.R Rahman, speaking to Variety, expressed his pride in Khatija's individuality and creative path. He shared, “I’m always proud of her. She is herself. She’s not under the shadow of me or anything.” Rahman mentioned being surprised by her musical endeavors, indicating a promising future.
Khatija’s choice to wear the niqab garnered attention, a decision that her father proudly supports. Rahman acknowledged her strong-willed nature, labeling her a rebel and applauding her choice to stand for individuals who wear the niqab as a statement, bringing more attention than opting otherwise.
‘Lioness’ is slated to commence production in the first quarter of 2024, with plans for a global release in early 2025. The film's thematic depth, coupled with Khatija Rahman’s musical talents, is set to create a poignant cinematic experience.
