Kevin Feige recently confirmed that Robert Downey Jr.'s iconic portrayal of Iron Man won't see a resurrection in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In a Vanity Fair profile on Downey Jr., Feige emphasized the significance of the pivotal moment Iron Man had in 'The Avengers: Endgame,' stating they're committed to honoring that storyline without revisiting it.
Downey Jr.'s last appearance as the beloved superhero was in 'The Avengers: Endgame' in 2019, marking Iron Man's heroic demise. Any hopes of Tony Stark returning in any form have been firmly quashed by Feige and director Joe Russo, who affirmed that emotionally, the team had bid farewell to the character during the filming's closure.
Anthony Russo reflected on the difficulty Downey Jr. faced delivering his final lines as Tony Stark, mentioning how poignantly fitting it was that the scene was shot near the place where he initially auditioned for the role.
Feige reminisced about the initial challenges in casting Downey Jr. due to concerns from the Marvel board regarding his past legal troubles. However, Feige's persistence and the idea of a screen test ultimately led to Downey Jr. becoming the linchpin of the MCU.
